A report in Popular Mechanics about Apple Inc.’s LIDAR and camera-equipped vans prowling the streets of San Francisco and Brooklyn have spurned much discussion on the internet and elsewhere as to what the Cupertino, Calif., company’s next aspirations are. While some are speculating the company might be creating its own driverless car or version of Google’s Street View the consensus is that neither are in fact the case.
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Apple has dedicated a team of several hundred people in an effort to enter the electric vehicle market building Apple-branded electric vehicle code-named “Titan.” Daisuke Wakabayashi and Mike Ramsey report that the company, who redefined music distribution and mobile phones, OK’d the project over a year ago when ex-Ford engineer and Apple exec Steve Zadesky began to assemble a team of nearly 1,000 people for the project. Now they have clearly set their sites on revolutionizing the automobile. This who are familiar with the project said initial designs resembled a minivan.
