Everyone was excited to see what was waiting under the tree this year, but perhaps none more than mobile analytics company Flurry Analytics. As the wrapping paper was ripped away more people than ever were surprised to find a phablet waiting to be activated. Once criticized by many and even ignored by Apple for being to large, the large screen phablet form factor is making its mark. In 2015 over one in four, or 27% of all new devices were phablets, an incredible rise from just two years prior when only 4% of device activations leading into the holidays were phablets.
Moreover, it prior years it appeared that phablets were goring at the expense of the tablet market, with tablet share decreasing from 17% in 2013 to 11% 2014. However in 2015 it now appears that consumers are choosing to use a phablet, not instead of a tablet but instead of the smaller-sized phone. And the 3.5-inch screen smartphones are headed the way of the flip phone.
