Today Apple is expected to launch its highly anticipated smartwatch, making entry into a new technology space. As reported by the Smartwatch Group, 89 companies sold 6.8 million smart watches worldwide in 2014 with an average price per watch of $189. It is widely believed that the Apple Watch Sport Edition will start at $349 with the gold Luxury Edition starting at $5,000 or more.
Samsung, with sales of approximately 1.2 million units in 2014, currently dominates the segment and will be Apple’s primary competitor. Pebble, one of the first successful startups bankrolled by a crowdfunding campaign, follows with 700,000. Fitbit rounds out the top three with sales of 600,000 smartwatches.
All eyes will be on Apple in coming months to see if the Cupertino-based tech giant can once again redefine and dominate an emerging product segment.
