In 2016 augmented reality finally became real for many consumers with the success of Pokemon Go. And all the industry heavyweights such as Google, Apple, Microsoft and Facebook are reportedly working on augmented reality devices that are being touted as the next ‘next big thing’. Even Apple CEO Tim Cook recently proclaimed that augmented reality will be bigger as the smartphone.
Sony, Facebook, Google and others shipped an estimated 10 million virtual reality headset units in 2016 and the technology clearly has a head start over augmented reality. And, according to a recent forecast published by IDC, AR headsets won’t be competing with VR devices in terms of unit sales anytime soon. However the company’s analysts are expecting augmented reality headsets to become the much bigger market in terms of revenue. With analysts at IDC estimating the augmented reality market to reach nearly $50 billion a year by 2021, it is easy to why every major player is moving to make a play in the space.
